There is a wealth of wildlife living near the shores of Rudyard
Lake and on the wooded hillsides surrounding the lake, making
it a paradise for wildlife photographers. Some of their recent
pictures are shown here, and others can be seen on display in
the Visitor Centre at the damhead.
Several varieties of duck can be seen swimming on the lake,
and stately herons and flocks of seagulls fly overhead. Swans
are occasional visitors, as are Canada Geese who congregate
at the northern end of the lake during their annual stopovers.
Other temporary residents include a wide variety of wading
birds, like greenshanks and sandpipers. Over the pastures
and scrubland you can see skylarks and meadow pipits, willow
warblers and other songbirds. One regular visitor is a magnificent
osprey which arrives in late June and departs in September.
Tree branches are alive with coaltits, goldcrests and finches,
with colourful woodpeckers and jays. The woods shelter badgers,
foxes, squirrels, voles, mice and other small rodents.
The lake itself is home to roach, perch, bream, carp and
pike, which attract anglers from all parts of the UK to visit
Rudyard and fish from its shores.
